Which makes it sound like the more Carver gets comfortable, the more dangerous he's likely to become. If it was Jesus on the line, Jesus risking friendship against a potential knife at his throat, he wouldn't feel this nervous about it.
"Throwing knives." She smiles because it's almost completely useless back home, but the sort of thing she thinks Jesus would like: "We can have target practice bets."
But more importantly, "He says when he's satisfied my arm is better we can grapple and he'll teach me some holds. Or how to break legs."
Some of which Rosita already knows on the fly, but she's never one to turn down an opportunity to learn something useful.
"Dunno. I wasn't sure if I wanted to at first, but that's why I wanted you and me to promise we'd touch base afterwards. I expected some hinky shit to go down."
In fact Carver is the only one she felt like she couldn't extract that promise from, and he's the only one that anything happened with that could make them avoid each other indefinitely.
He sighs faintly. "Any time something like this happens, where we're compelled to share, he's probably going to go off, Rosita. If we want him in the group--if we even want him near our group--we need to be prepared for that."
"Since when has keeping what's ours not involved risk?" Places, resources - people. Rosita's not about to leave Jesus holding the bag, and especially not just because she doesn't want to.
"Nah. I've never been the sit back and hope type."
"He does. There's already a well pump to generate electricity. The girl who had it before him was from someplace like our world, he says, only she found out she was immune to being bitten."
A fact Rosita has no idea what to do with but that's neither here nor there. "He also said at first he wanted me to go stay there."
He looks up at her, reminds himself it's another world. Not theirs. Funny how one of his friends can control fire and that hasn't seemed as impossible, as miraculous, as what Rosita just said.
"If it ends up being a good stronghold, maybe you can talk him into there being room for more of us."
"Oh, for sure - I'm still going to help him. It already has a good start, and honestly if shit hits the fan, I'd like to see any Duplicity officials come and drag me out of the strongest place I can find."
They won't. She and Jesus both already know it.
But as for the question - "He and Vrenille love each other, or they did. They both skipped out of contracts to sign together before. Once they remember it now, what's changed?"
"I'll ask him," she promises, because Jesus's help would be invaluable for getting the place up and running more quickly - but it's not her place even though her name is on it, and that it's Jesus and it's Jacob makes it a little more complicated.
"I still want to find another piece of property. Somewhere for us."
"I've been looking. I'm going to see a friend about it in the next couple of days. If I can find a decent spot I'll let you know, bring you out to see it, too." Just having this little mission has revived him, calmed some of the taut energy coursing through him the past few weeks.

She shakes her head: "I haven't talked to him since the therapy thing. I need to though. There's no way I'm leaving shit like it is now."
As for before that, she shrugs. "Couple times since we got out of the pit."

"What has Jacob said he can teach you?"

So, instead: "Jacob wants me to help make his place self-sufficient."

Another place to stash supplies that he and Rosita might be welcome to if things go to hell is never a bad idea, either.

Vrenille, what little he and Jesus have talked about it, has seemed disconnected from Jacob even more than before.
