"Okay." It's her call to make, he's just here to support it. To be backup when she needs it. "Just be careful."

Carver is a tricky subject; she still feels a tangle of things when she thinks about him, and she doesn't have names or roots for a lot of it.

So, instead: "Jacob wants me to help make his place self-sufficient."

He considers that and nods. "Not a bad idea. Especially if he has the space for the resources."

Another place to stash supplies that he and Rosita might be welcome to if things go to hell is never a bad idea, either.

"He does. There's already a well pump to generate electricity. The girl who had it before him was from someplace like our world, he says, only she found out she was immune to being bitten."

A fact Rosita has no idea what to do with but that's neither here nor there. "He also said at first he wanted me to go stay there."

He looks up at her, reminds himself it's another world. Not theirs. Funny how one of his friends can control fire and that hasn't seemed as impossible, as miraculous, as what Rosita just said.

"If it ends up being a good stronghold, maybe you can talk him into there being room for more of us."

"A stronghold I lose access to when we're not contracted anymore," she points out, picking at the leftovers of her sandwich.

"And I expect that sooner than later."

"He could still be a good ally." A place to run and hide if things get really dicey in the city. "What makes you think sooner than later?"

Vrenille, what little he and Jesus have talked about it, has seemed disconnected from Jacob even more than before.

"Oh, for sure - I'm still going to help him. It already has a good start, and honestly if shit hits the fan, I'd like to see any Duplicity officials come and drag me out of the strongest place I can find."

They won't. She and Jesus both already know it.

But as for the question - "He and Vrenille love each other, or they did. They both skipped out of contracts to sign together before. Once they remember it now, what's changed?"

"Maybe nothing," he admits, but something cosmic has changed--even if temporarily. If not, Rosita wouldn't be signed with Jacob at all.

"Do you want any help getting his place fortified?"

"I'll ask him," she promises, because Jesus's help would be invaluable for getting the place up and running more quickly - but it's not her place even though her name is on it, and that it's Jesus and it's Jacob makes it a little more complicated.

"I still want to find another piece of property. Somewhere for us."

"I've been looking. I'm going to see a friend about it in the next couple of days. If I can find a decent spot I'll let you know, bring you out to see it, too." Just having this little mission has revived him, calmed some of the taut energy coursing through him the past few weeks.

She hasn't been. She's been watching SIN guards, and navigating contract bullshit.

And... other bullshit.

"You and your friends," she mutters, but it's good natured. "You know, I would have called myself friendly before all this. I can talk to people. I just ran out of patience somewhere along the way."

"Well, that was job security for me," he points out. Most people didn't want to go out in the world to find other human beings. Most people ran out of patience or willingness to risk their lives just to say 'hello'.

Most people had more than enough mouths to feed.

"Job security," she snorts, because it's laughable in the world they come from. Speaking of which - "You really came through all that therapy bullshit okay?"

"Yeah." He frowns, thinking it through, though. "I got to know Hakkyuu a little better--it just wasn't how I would've wanted it to happen. But I guess we don't get to choose that here anymore."
