She feels crazy these days. Sometimes anyway, climbing the walls and trying not to hurt anyone. Sometimes she sleeps like the dead- the real dead, that stay in their coffins in the ground.
The moment he's there she starts down the gang plank. She cuts sharp along the dock and strides along the harbor headed for the least busy part of the city she could spot from the deck.
He follows along beside her, letting her take the lead, letting her choose where they go. "Smells like a city," he says, and he's not sure he likes the smell anymore after so long in the woods and a year now on the Barge.
"Sounds like a city," she agrees without looking back. Feels like a city.
Is a city, teeming and crowded even at its least populated parts. The only problem is she has no idea how far whatever counts for wilderness is here.
"You get a list? Or is it just us?" Just what they think is important. Her eyes are busy, her shoulders tense, her knife worn openly on her hip although she's tucked her jacket over it.
"Just us. Everyone else is getting the Admiral's wish list, we can cover what we know gets us through." The things that matter when everything else falls completely apart.
He follows her and after a few steps he's grinning. "It's just nice to be off the ship."
It makes her feel better, in a way she couldn't explain if she tried; she can kind of see the shape of it, knows the Barge makes her feel like she's constantly fighting to feel stable and get a hold on what's going on, but if this isn't the Barge, if this is just survival, well.
She knows how to do that, doesn't she?
She doesn't answer right away, takes a bit longer to be sure they can move freely, unhindered by some impossible function of the Barge or anyone trying to challenge them.
Finally she breathes in deep and slow, breathes out, and says, "Yeah."
"Better, I hope. Although I'm not sure how I'd measure 'better', in a place like the Barge. Are you sleeping okay?" Maybe it all comes down to basics again: is she sleeping, is she eating. Is she surviving.
She considers lying. Surviving is different from being okay and she is definitely one over the other, and back home she wouldn't say anything at all. Back home they'd need to focus on one over the other. But this is not hone.
This is decidedly not home.
She shakes her head.
"Not really. It was already hard. Now..." She shrugs. It is what it is.
